Engineering of Wright Brothers (Aeroplanes)

Engineering starts from somewhere. The man who inspired the Wright Brothers — Otto Lilienthal — was the first person to take safe and replicable gliding flights. Before Lilienthal's successes, flying was considered to be an impossibility reserved "for dreamers and fools."
The Wright brothersOrville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903 four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1904-1905 the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.
The brothers' fundamental breakthrough was their invention of three-axis control, which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method became and remains standard on fixed-wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers focused on developing a reliable method of pilot control as the key to solving "the flying problem". This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time who put more emphasis on developing powerful engines. Using a small homebuilt wind tunnel, the Wrights also collected more accurate data than any before, enabling them to design and build wings and propellers that were more efficient than any before. 
They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice. From 1900 until their first powered flights in late 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests that also developed their skills as pilots. Their bicycle shop employee Charlie Taylor became an important part of the team, building their first airplane engine in close collaboration with the brothers.

All together, Lilienthal constructed 18 types of gliders — 15 monoplanes and three biplanes — and he took over 2,000 glider flights.

During his last flight he lost control and went into a nosedive, which fractured his spine. While he was lying in the hospital, his last words were "Opfer müssen gebracht werden!", meaning "Sacrifices must be made!"

ANT & VANITY OF LIFE


🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🌿One Saturday morning, a wealthy man sat in his balcony enjoying the sunshine and his coffee when a little ant caught his eye; going from one side to the other side of the balcony, carrying a big leaf several times more than its size.
🌿The man watched it for more than an hour. He saw that the ant faced many impediments during its journey, paused, took a diversion and then continued towards its destination.
🌿At one point the tiny creature came across a crack in the floor. It paused for a little while, analyzed and then laid the huge leaf over the crack, walked over the leaf, picked the leaf on the other side then continued its journey.
🌿The man was captivated by the cleverness of the ant, one of God’s tiniest creatures.
🌿The incident left the man in awe and forced him to contemplate over the miracle of Creation. It showed the greatness of the Creator. 

🌿Before his very eyes was this tiny creature of God, lacking in size yet equipped with a brain to analyze, contemplate, reason, explore, discover and overcome.
🌿Along with all these capabilities, the man also noticed that this tiny creature shared some human shortcomings.
🌿The man saw about an hour later that the creature had reached its destination – a tiny hole in the floor which was entrance to its underground dwelling.
🌿At this point the ant’s shortcoming that it shared with man was revealed.
🌿How could the ant carry the large leaf it carefully managed to its destination into the tiny hole? It simply couldn’t!
🌿So the tiny creature, after all the painstaking and hard work and exercising great skills, overcoming all the difficulties along the way, just left behind the large leaf and went home empty-handed.
🌿The ant had not thought about the end before it began its challenging journey and in the end the large leaf was nothing more than a burden to it.
🌿The creature had no option, but to leave it behind, to reach its destination.
🌿The man learned a great lesson that day. Isn’t that the truth about our lives?
🌿We worry about our family, 

🌿We worry about our job, 

🌿We worry about how to earn more money, 

🌿We worry about where we should live – 5 bedroom or 6 bedroom house. 

🌿What kind of vehicle to buy – a Mercedes or Honda or BMW or a Porsche? 

🌿What kind of dress to wear? 

🌿All sorts of things, only to abandon all these things when we reach the entrance to our destination – {THE GRAVE} when we realize we cannot enter our destination with all these things.
🌿We don’t realize in our life’s journey that these are just burdens that we are carrying with utmost care and fear of losing them, only to find that at the end, they are useless and we can’t take them with us.
🌿The ONLY TREASURE that lasts FOREVER is; OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR CREATOR - GOD.
🌿So ask yourself, "AM I USING MY WHOLE LIFE TO SERVE HIM?
🌿May God guide us all and remove from our hearts the excessive love we have for this world. Amen.

Lord Kelvin (William Thomson)

Whether a scientist or not, this article is an exclusive on Lord Kelvin (William Thomson), an eminent physicist with a wide range of interests and enthusiasms.

William Thomson was born at 21-25 College Square East in Belfast in 1824. This location was later home to the first cinema in Belfast – 'the Kelvin'.
Lord Kelvin's father became Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University. Kelvin attended university classes from the age of 10. He wrote his first scientific paper, under the pseudonym 'PQR', aged only 16.
In his teens he learned French well enough to read the work of eminent French mathematician Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier. Philip Kelland, Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University, had criticised Fourier's work on the theory of heat. Kelvin boldly stated that Kelland was wrong – and later scientists agreed with him. From 1841 to 1845 Kelvin attended Cambridge University. He was an excellent student – although he shocked his father by spending his allowance on a boat.

After graduating, Kelvin worked in a Paris laboratory with physics professor Victor Regnault. Kelvin was influenced by the mathematical ideas of George Green, a self-taught miller's son from Nottingham. He later brought an essay of Green's to the attention of fellow mathematicians and physicists by republishing it in a respected scientific journal. Until then the essay on mathematical analysis, electricity and magnetism had gone largely unnoticed. In 1846, aged only 22, Kelvin returned to Glasgow University to become Professor of Natural Philosophy. He remained in this post for 53 years. Keen to see students involved in practical experiment, he established what became the first university physics laboratory.

Kelvin continued to study the nature of heat. He realised that it would be useful to be able to define extremely low temperatures precisely. In 1848, he proposed an absolute temperature scale, now called 'the Kelvin scale'.
After further research, Kelvin formulated the second law of thermodynamics. This states that heat will not flow from a colder to a hotter body.

His interest in the transmission of electricity prompted Kelvin's appointment as Director of the Atlantic Telegraph Company in 1856.
The company was to install a telegraph cable under the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic Cable Expeditions in 1857, 1858 and 1865 failed, but communication by cable finally succeeded in 1866. Kelvin received a knighthood for his efforts in this project. He was ennobled in 1892 in recognition of his achievements in thermodynamics, and of his opposition to Irish Home Rule, becoming Baron Kelvin, of Largs in the County of Ayr. He was the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords. The title refers to the River Kelvin, which flows close by his laboratory at the University of Glasgow.

From 1870 onwards, Kelvin spent many summers on his yacht 'Lalla Rookh', and invented several marine instruments to improve navigation and safety.
He introduced a mariner's compass more accurate than any other in existence, and a machine to predict tide levels worldwide.
He became an International celebrity. In 1884 Kelvin travelled to the United States to give a series of lectures. These were enthusiastically received, and were published in 1904 as the 'Baltimore Lectures'. Kelvin became a Lord in 1892 and took the name Kelvin because of his Glasgow connections. By the time of his death in 1907, he was an internatio
nal celebrity, widely respected and honoured.
Thomson published more than 600 papers. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1851, received its Royal Medal in 1856, received its Copley Medal in 1883 and served as its president from 1890 to 1895. In addition to his activities with the Royal Society, as one would expect of such an eminent Scottish professor, he served the Royal Society of Edinburgh over many years. He served three terms as president of this Society, first from 1873 to 1878, for the second time from 1886 to 1890, and for the third time from 1895 until his death in 1907. Thomson served as president of yet a third society when he was elected as president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1871.

How To Enjoy Your Birthday

Do you know How  To Enjoy Your Birthday? Not everyone knows it is good to mark it. It is an additional year in your life and it is worth celebrating with some friends, family, colleagues, loved ones, church members, fellowship members, group members, facebook friends, Instagram friends, twitter friends, and your fans/followers.

You do not have to be the best guy in  the hood or the Celebrity in the clan, or the most influential guy in the clique of friends; all that you need is some tips. You can do it. Most people only think of celebrating their 7th, 10th, 16th, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th, 100th birthday and so on.

There is a reason for the season and there is a reason for your living. When I have my birthday, it is a time to say to my God and Creator, thanks you. My name "Chiemela" in Igbo means "thank you God" and I choose to say God am so grateful.

Birthdays are times to share and toast some wine, cut cake, take some time out, take some cool pictures, have some fun, celebrate with friends, visit some places, & so on.



You should have good plans as a new year means new responsibilities and new angle of reasoning, so you are also wiser and richer. Stay connected and stay great.

My last birthday, I chose to visit Old Trafford Stadium, the home of Manchester United Football Club, in Manchester, UK& later went to the Cinema to see a 3D Movie-STAR WARS:VII (The Force) and later had some extra fun inbetween. I had some friends and some colleagues too around and I really say thank you to them all.














Is Kigali (Rwanda's capital) more beautiful than Abuja (Nigeria's capital)?

Is Kigali (Rwanda's capital) more beautiful than Abuja (Nigeria's capital)? Why will UN choose Kigali as the most beautiful city in Africa? A beautiful city is one that has all these attributes.

Does Abuja have these attributes?
1. Order. Organised complexity if you wish. Does Abuja have pedestrian only streets?
2. Visible life...active people.
3. Compactness....not sprawling. Definately not Phoenic Arizona. But like Barcelona.
4. Accepted orientation and mystery. Get lost and find yourself. Small streets and big streets. Organized.
5. Scale. High Skylines are not always best. We need sun and fresh air like Berlin and Amsterdam. Not Manhattan.
6. Local....A city should reflect it's local character. Kigali does by all means.
7. Safety. You should be able to shop at 3am. In Kigali you can....not sure of Abuja.
8. You should be able to see green and working lights. No lights off.


But for those who have been, some have the following reservations / complaints about Kigali:
1. The civilian police are armed combat, menacing at the many roadblocks and too scaring for a tourist/visitor
2. I got robbed at a fuel station within CBD (kigali Hass petroleum). They filled 'full' tank of fuel only to see an empty tank. No complaints was tolerated. We almost got locked in.
3. The hotel staff at sports view (aparently a 5-star next to state house) has the laziest of waiters and staff. We were served lousy food after 3hours wait. Btw its a very elegant hotel with rubbish service.
4. Just off the small beautiful CBD tarmac roads are bumpy murram roads.
5. The people of Rwanda are not hospitable. Most of The Women are beautiful and so lazy.
6. They should Try learn some basic English too, to help relate with the high numbers of English-speaking tourists and visitors.
7. The police almost locked my family in for driving out the country on a 'compulsory' social working day. They literally spoke kinyaruanda and made their verdict in a language we barely understood.
8. Roads too narrow just outside CBD.
9. Rwanda a long way to go; so do you still want to visit it?
