Turbulence, fluid mechanics and Hydrodynamics

In fluid dynamics, turbulence or turbulent flow is a fluid regime characterized by chaotic, stochastic property changes. This includes low momentum diffusion, high momentum convection, and rapid variation of pressure and velocity in space and time. Flow that is not turbulent is called laminar flow. The (dimensionless) Reynolds number characterizes whether flow conditions lead to laminar or turbulent flow; e.g. for pipe flow, a Reynolds number above about 4000 (A Reynolds number between 2100 and 4000 is known as transitional flow) will be turbulent. At very low speeds the flow is laminar, i.e., the flow is smooth (though it may involve vortices on a large scale). As the speed increases, at some point the transition is made to turbulent flow. In turbulent flow, unsteady vortices appear on many scales and interact with each other. Drag due to boundary layer skin friction increases. The structure and location of boundary layer separation often changes, sometimes resulting in a reduction of overall drag. Because laminar-turbulent transition is governed by Reynolds number, the same transition occurs if the size of the object is gradually increased, or the viscosity of the fluid is decreased, or if the density of the fluid is increased.

Turbulence causes the formation of eddies of many different length scales. Most of the kinetic energy of the turbulent motion is contained in the large scale structures. The energy “cascades” from these large scale structures to smaller scale structures by an inertial and essentially inviscid mechanism. This process continues, creating smaller and smaller structures which produces a hierarchy of eddies. Eventually this process creates structures that are small enough that molecular diffusion becomes important and viscous dissipation of energy finally takes place. The scale at which this happens is the Kolmogorov length scale.

In two dimensional turbulence (as can be approximated in the atmosphere or ocean), energy actually flows to larger scales. This is referred to as the inverse energy cascade and is characterized by a k − (5 / 3) in the power spectrum. This is the main reason why large scale weather features such as hurricanes occur.

Turbulent diffusion is usually described by a turbulent diffusion coefficient. This turbulent diffusion coefficient is defined in a phenomenological sense, by analogy with the molecular diffusivities, but it does not have a true physical meaning, being dependent on the flow conditions, and not a property of the fluid, itself. In addition, the turbulent diffusivity concept assumes a constitutive relation between a turbulent flux and the gradient of a mean variable similar to the relation between flux and gradient that exists for molecular transport. In the best case, this assumption is only an approximation. Nevertheless, the turbulent diffusivity is the simplest approach for quantitative analysis of turbulent flows, and many models have been postulated to calculate it. For instance, in large bodies of water like oceans this coefficient can be found using Richardson‘s four-third power law and is governed by the random walk principle. In rivers and large ocean currents, the diffusion coefficient is given by variations of Elder’s formula.

When designing piping systems, turbulent flow requires a higher input of energy from a pump (or fan) than laminar flow. However, for applications such as heat exchangers and reaction vessels, turbulent flow is essential for good heat transfer and mixing.

While it is possible to find some particular solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations governing fluid motion, all such solutions are unstable at large Reynolds numbers. Sensitive dependence on the initial and boundary conditions makes fluid flow irregular both in time and in space so that a statistical description is needed. Russian mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov proposed the first statistical theory of turbulence, based on the aforementioned notion of the energy cascade (an idea originally introduced by Richardson) and the concept of self-similarity. As a result, the Kolmogorov microscales were named after him. It is now known that the self-similarity is broken so the statistical description is presently modified. Still, the complete description of turbulence remains one of the unsolved problems in physics. According to an apocryphal story Werner Heisenberg was asked what he would ask God, given the opportunity. His reply was: “When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions: Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he will have an answer for the first.” A similar witticism has been attributed to Horace Lamb (who had published a noted text book on Hydrodynamics)—his choice being quantum mechanics (instead of relativity) and turbulence. Lamb was quoted as saying in a speech to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, “I am an old man now, and when I die and go to heaven there are two matters on which I hope for enlightenment. One is quantum electrodynamics, and the other is the turbulent motion of fluids. And about the former I am rather optimistic.”

Halima (a writeup inspiration)

Halima had a good marriage. Her husband, a driver, did his best to provide for her. The marriage could have waited at least another year but her stepmother had already married off 2 daughters with a third in the offing so her mother felt there was catching up to do.
The birth of their baby, however, marked the start of a nightmare. She had gone into labour soon after Nura left on one of his long trips and by the time he returned 2 days thereafter, the baby still hadn’t come. On the third day, Halima passed out during the course of the night. Despite all efforts, it was too late for the baby and Halima’s bowels started leaking as the delayed labour broke down the tissue between the vaginal wall and the rectum, making surgery inevitable. She would have to be cared for like a child.

Her husband was distressed. Where was he to find the money for the medical procedure? Who would take care of her? He eventually sent her back to her parent’s home “for a while”.

She was returning from a visit to relatives when some gaily dressed men came out of her father’s ‘zaure’ congratulating one of them who was dressed in a white babbar-riga. As they drove off, someone made a comment and they all burst into raucous laughter.
“Who is he?” she inquired.
“Ladan” said her brother Haruna, offering a response. “Very wealthy car dealer in Kano”.
“So?”
“So he came to ask Baba’s permission to marry Hadiza”

Hadiza. Her 13 year old step-sister.

Her ordeal flashed across her mind.

“What is wrong?” Her mother’s voice snapped her out of her reminiscing.
“Nothing Mama, nothing is wrong” she replied.

Her disposition belied her words; tears were flowing down her cheeks.

DEAR MARRIED LADY

1. Dear Married Lady, Holy wives don't just speak in tongues. They cook super meals, they raise godly kids, wear hot dresses(for their husbands), they have mind-blowing sex & still make Heaven.
2. Dear Married Lady, Forget about changing your husband. Just be an upgraded version of you with more value and sweetness.
3. Dear Married Lady, Look at your Husband with the lense of righteousness in Christ Jesus. He may have some wrong doings but do not focus on the wrong doings but rather focus on the Christ in him. In other words, focus on his positives and not the negatives. Do this in wisdom!
4. Dear Married Lady, Familiarity has the tendency of taking things for granted: our family and especially our husbands
Replace nagging with appreciation!
5. Dear Married Lady, Be the number one FAN of your husband. Support him in all his interest. Ensure you decree greatness in all his endeavours. Don't allow other ladies to do this for you. Be the first and best at this.
6. Dear Married Lady, As Christ is Love so are you.
As Christ is forgiveness so are you. Do not punish your Husband with tight jeans. Let him give you some massage
or buy you something nice. You are not a fool! You care for your marriage.
7. Dear Married Lady, Decide that loving is intentional and intentionally love your partner. Find out what love means to your partner and give it. Don't assume a common definition of love. What is love to you may not be for him. Portray the love he yearns.
8. Dear Married Lady, In this age where technology is supposed to break homes, use this same technology to build your home. Text your husband some hot messages as a shadow of the things awaiting him at home.
9. Dear Married lady, Don't focus on the competition outside the home and get bitter. You are not the only Lady who Loves your husband. Focus on your Husband and give him the best of treatment always; especially when you think he doesn't.

WORDS FROM A FATHER TO A SON ABOUT MARRIAGE
1. My son, if you keep spending on a woman and she never asked you if you’re saving or investing, and she keeps enjoying the attention, don’t marry her.
2. My son, a woman could be a good wife to you, some could be a good mother to your children but if you’ve found a woman like a mother to you, your children and your family, please don’t let her go.
3. My son, don’t confine the position of your wife to the kitchen, where did you get that from? Even in our days, we had farm-lands where they worked every morning . . . that was our office.
4. My son, if I tell you that you’re the head of the house, don’t look at your pocket; look if you will see a smile on your wife’s face.
5. My son, if you want to have a long life, let your wife be in-charge of your salary, it will be difficult for her to spend it when she’s aware of the home needs and bills to pay but if it’s in your care, she will keep you asking even when all has been spent.
6. My son, don’t ever beat your woman, the pain in her body is nothing to be compared to the wound on her heart and that means you may be in trouble living with a wounded woman.
7. My son, now that you’re married, if you live a bachelor kind of life with your wife, you will soon be single again.
8. My son, in our days, we had many wives and many children because of our large farm-lands and many harvests, there are hardly any land for farming anymore, so embrace your woman closely.
9. My son, under the cocoa tree that I did meet your mother could be your eateries and restaurants of nowadays, but remember, the closet thing we did there was to embrace each other.
10. My son, don’t be carried away when you start making more money, instead of spending on those tiny legs that never knew how hard you worked to get it, spend it on that woman that stood by you all along.
11. My son, when I threw little stones or whistled at the window of your mother father’s house, to call her out, it was not for sex, it was because I missed her so much.
12. My son, remember, when you say your wife has changed, there could be something you’ve stopped doing too.
13. My son, your mother, Asake rode the bicycle with me before I bought that tortoise car outside there, any woman that won’t endure with you in your little beginning should not enjoy your riches.
14. My son, don’t compare your wife to any woman, there are ways she’s enduring you too and has she ever compared you to any man?
15. My son, there is this thing you people call feminism, well, if a woman claim to have equal right with you in the house, divide all the bills into two equal parts, take one part and ask her to start paying the other part.
16. My son, I met your mother a virgin and I took more yams to her father, if you don’t meet your wife a virgin, don’t blame her, what I didn’t tell you is that our women had prestige.
17. My son, I didn’t send your sisters to school because I was foolish like many to think a female child won’t extend my family name, please don’t make that mistake, the kind of female achievers I see nowadays has made the male-gender an ordinary tag.
18. My son, your mother have once locked up the cloth I was wearing and almost tore it because she was angry, I did not raise my hand to beat her because of a day like this, so that I can be proud to tell you that I never for once beat your mother.
19. My son, in our days, our women had more of natural beauty, though I wouldn’t lie to you, some had minor painting of their appellation mostly on their arms, the ones you people now call tattoo, but don’t forget that they didn’t expose any part of their body like your women of nowadays.
20. My son, your mother and I are not interested in what happens in your marriage, try to handle issues without always coming to us.
21. My son, remember I bought your mother’s first sewing machine for her, help your wife achieve her dreams just as you’re pursuing yours.
22. My son, don’t stop taking care of me and your mother, it’s a secret of growing old and having children to take care of you too.
23. My son, pray with your family, there is a tomorrow you don’t know, talk to God that knows everything, everyday.

Shopping FACTS 2016

As both retailers and consumers are getting ready for the largest shopping weekend of the year, brick-and-mortar and online stores are competing for the attention (and the money) of holiday shoppers. Most current research suggests that consumers will split their holiday spending evenly between the digital and the real world, but how do they decide where to buy what?

According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, it’s all about the right deals. When asked about the most important factors in deciding to shop at a particular retailer, both on and offline, 73 percent named sales and discounts as a key factor. How else can retailers lure shoppers into spending their holiday dollars at the right place? The following chart has the answers.

This year, about 137.4 million Americans are expected to head out and participate in the Thanksgiving shopping frenzy. Traditionally, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two of the biggest U.S. shopping days, with customers splashing billions in cash to kick off the holiday season.

This year, apparel tops the list of items in demand. According to research from Nielsen, 61 percent of U.S. consumers are planning to purchase some form of apparel item this year. Consumer electronics and video games are also hot properties this year, with 56 and 43 percent of customers respectively planning to purchase them.

Online Food Delivery

Back in the day, when you came home from a long day at work to an empty fridge, your options were limited. Sure, you could order a Pizza (again) but there was hardly a way to satisfy your cravings for more exotic food options. These days, it's hard to think of a meal that you couldn't order online and have delivered to your doorstep within the hour, that is if you live in an urban area.

As the following chart based on data from Statista's Digital Market Outlook shows, online food delivery is already a billion-dollar market and one that is poised for rapid growth over the next few years. Our analysts expect the U.S. market to grow to nearly $40 billion in annual revenue by 2021, up from $13 billion this year.
