The Buffalo Hunter

There is a story told about a professional hunter who had a friend who always wanted to go with him on one of his hunts. So one day he said to his friend, "I have a permit to go into the Zambezi Valley and hunt for a buffalo. Would you like to come with me?"

The friend was ecstatic at the opportunity.

"When do we go?" he asked.

"In about six months time, but before then I have to train you about hunting."

For the next six months, the two men met every day, and they discussed and planned for the trip. The hunter's friend was surprised by how meticulous the hunter was about everything.

He taught him about the bush, and how to survive in it. He taught him everything about buffaloes.

“You must respect the buffalo,” he said, “because it's a very intelligent animal, and it is also extremely dangerous."

He gave him lots of books to read, about hunting and buffaloes.

During that time, the friend also trained every day at the shooting range. He understood by then the different types of guns used to hunt buffalo. He also had to do fitness training, which surprised him.

"You can die out there if you are not fit," his friend explained.

He was totally astounded by what he was learning about hunting.

"Until now, I thought all you do is just go out and shoot, but now I know there’s more to this than meets the eye!" he exclaimed.

When the day came, the two men set out into the wild bush of the Zambezi Valley, one of the most beautiful places on the earth. It is also inhospitably hot, and the terrain is tough.

They'd been tracking one single animal for 5 days, and the hunter's friend was totally exhausted. He watched as his friend patiently made meticulous plans every single day. The hunter seamed to take forever, from the point of view of his friend. Sometimes they would walk, and sometimes they would sit for hours. The hunter was always looking around, scanning the bushes, not even (it appeared) always paying attention to the surrounding areas more than the buffalo.

"Why can't he just shoot and we go home!?"

He was getting tired of this, as they walked almost 50 miles a day. He was also hungry most of the time, as they only ate rations of dried meat and fruit, most of the time. The hunter looked at the animal through his gun sight over and over every day, but wouldn’t take a shot. Sometimes they appeared so close, but he still did not do anything.

It was the fifth day: The animal was in sight again, but the hunter was going through his routine again. The friend sat in the bushes, when suddenly a rabbit appeared in front of him and he thought to himself, "At least if I shoot this rabbit, we can have meat tonight. I'm tired of dry rations." So he pulled out his gun and fired once. The rabbit disappeared, as he had missed anyway, but so did the buffalo, and with it, the entire herd.

The hunter looked at him in total horror and disbelief!

Then he shouted, "Run, or you die!" as he took off.

They almost got stampeded by an entire herd that seemed to appear from nowhere. Also, suddenly there were lions everywhere that he had not seen before! But for the skills of the hunter, who led them both to safety, they could have died.

The buffalo was gone. The hunt was over.

They had to return home, empty-handed.

Joke: Akpos and the Prof

A Prof and Akpos was seating next to each other in a long flight.


Prof said to Akpos: lets play agame, I will ask you a question and if you didn’t get the answer, you will pay me $50,and if u ask me a question and I don’t get the answer, I will pay you $5000.

The Prof started: What is the distance from the earth to the moon?

Akpos doesn’t say a word, he reaches his pocket and pulls out a $50 and gives it to him.

Now it’s Akpos turn to ask, 
He said: What goes up the hill with 3 legs and comes down with 5 legs?

The Prof thought for a long time,searches the net, and asked all his smart friends but couldn’t get the answer.

He reached his pocket, pulled out a $5000 and gave it to Akpos.

The Prof got mad and asked Akpos: Well, what the hell goes up the hill with 3 legs and comes down with 5 legs?.

Akpos just dipped his hand into his pocket and gave Prof $50 and said: I don’t know also.

Check your Tyre Pressure

There is a story here you must read, about a man who was travelling, because many people have been wondering what could be the cause of the incessant tyre burst accidents on Nigerian roads. The major cause is that we put to much pressure in our tyres. How did you and I know?

A man said: "I was preparing for a journey, I changed some of my tyres and I asked the vulcanizer that ' what is the recommended tyre pressure? ' He said 50. I said alright, he should inflate it to 50 all round.

When I got to where I was going, I was discussing with some people on the issue of the minister that died on the road due to a burst tyre and wonder what could have happened because nobody could imagine a minister would be travelling with expired tyres as many would think is the major cause of tyre burst."

A man who had lived in US for many years said that the major cause of tyre burst in Nigeria is that we put to much pressure in our tyres and that each car has recommended tyre size and pressure clearly written on it by the manufacturer. I was surprised and begged him to come and show me where it's written on my car. To my greatest surprise, it's by the drivers door which I enter everyday without noticing it. By the time we checked, the recommended pressure for my tyres is 32! and I just traveled with tyres on a pressure of 50! He took me round his compound and showed me that of the cars (which includes a jeep and a sienna) there, the highest was 32. some were even 29!

He further explained that tyres are made of rubber and expands at high temperature. So, when you are travelling in the afternoon when the asphalt on the road is hot, the tyre will want to expand. If the pressure in the tyre is to much and wouldn't accommodate the expansion, a burst is likely to happen at that time.

Pls check the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle and others you know. I just checked mine and discovered it's 29 pressure but I've been putting 40-45 pressure in it. Thank God for this knowledge.

When I was doing a driving test in the UK, car tyre pressure is something you must learn and tyre maintenance. Try and use your car manual, its written there. Save a life today and drive safe.

Workers Day and You

An old man once told me when i was farming, that a hand that is soiled with dirty from the soil always makes the mouth oily. Happy Workers Day holiday.

Work is very essential, because it puts food on the table, and helps you pay your bills. The question is how do you see work? Also, what is the concept of Workers Day being recognised every May 1st?

I have a few words for you: You can be anything you want to be, or choose to be anyone or any where,  all you need is to believe in yourself. Destinies are not traded, neither is hardwork.

I have tried it and I know the principles and how they work.

Never be-little yourself. I have seen the best, being with the greatest, studied with the best, sat with the greatest, and I know some of these things, am still learning though.

Its a day when we have to remember all the hardwork of men that lived to make us comfortable, designed things for us, and miners who died working in mines.

In the UK, Nigeria, and so many other countries, May 1st is always recognised as a public holiday or bank holiday, because it is workers day.

Lancaster students ensure fundraising success

Lancaster students impressed a local business and charity as part of the Insight into Event Planning course run by Lancaster University Careers in Lent term 2016.

The students, who faced considerable time pressure to achieve success, took an innovative approach to the project, partnering with Nami Sushi to increase their chances of raising as much money as possible for CancerCare.
As part of the project students are invited to create an event/ project with a starting budget of £40. This group was able to raise a staggering £293.28 with an initial expenditure of only £4.75.
Rather than build a project from scratch, the team consisting of Kar Munn Tang, Crystal Gee, Victor Amaechi, Angeline Angeline, Julie Lemaitre, and Monjolaoluwa Okupe, decided to consider different ways to fundraise for the charity. Negotiating with the owners of Nami Sushi, the students agreed that part of the overall cost of each bill would be donated to charity.

With a poster campaign and Facebook publicity, the team made a fantastic impression, leading to Nami Sushi agreeing to support similar initiatives in the future and work with CancerCare.
The students have been a credit to Lancaster University and have made an impressive contribution to local business and charity organisations.

Huge congratulations to the team.

Amaechi Chiemela Victor in Lancaster

Lancaster was at the top of the list for Amaechi Chiemela Victor when it came to decision time for university applications. Since then, he has discovered a passion for sub-sea engineering as well as experience of working with a range of state-of-the-art facilities.

An international reputation

For Amaechi Chiemela Victor, Lancaster University was his top choice from the outset. “I always wanted the best and Lancaster is great institution,” he says. “It’s a Top 10 university with a great Nigerian society and the international office in Nigeria is so supportive.”

Victor claims that Lancaster was recommended to him whilst studying at another university. “I came here following my supervisor Professor Jianqiao Ye as he champions marine engineering research in addition to his vast experience in mechanical engineering here in Lancaster,” he says.

All the right tools

Lecturers at Lancaster’s Engineering Department have been influential to Victor during his time at the university and he’s always felt comfortable asking questions. “The staff are really friendly and I get all the support I need,” he explains. “The IT personnel are great at sourcing the software applications I need to run models, as well as providing me with a super-fast PC, which has helped my productivity and enabled me to use more engineering software in my research.”

During his time at Lancaster, Victor has enjoyed studying a diverse range of topics. “I love sub-sea engineering,” he says. “Studying this will help me solve problems of risers needed in deepwater exploration activities of oil and gas.”

Friendly community

Victor has settled well on campus, and has so far made the most of his time at Lancaster. “I’m currently living at the Graduate College,” he says. “I’ve enjoyed the sport facilities here, such as the 3G Astro Pitch, the Lawn Tennis Court and the Sports Centre. I can play the piano at theChaplaincy, and then there’s the Engineering Department resources and the Ruskin Library.” Victor is impressed with the range of subject literature on campus. “The University Libraryprovided me with a lot of access to books and journals,” he claims. “The Department also provided me with really useful engineering software. The LUGrad was my second home on campus.”

Creating memories

As his future career prospects draw closer, Victor is confident that Lancaster University is preparing him well for the journey ahead. “As well as the subject-specific teaching, I’m also receiving training on presentation, interview and research skills, which to me is just as important. The University is providing all the funding and support I require to carry out my research.”

Victor is looking forward to gaining a work placement. “I spend a couple hours weekly doing some volunteering work, which has helped me to learn and share knowledge.”

Speaking of the friendships he has developed during his time at Lancaster, Victor claims “I have another family here in the Department and everyone cares about you. I love Lancaster because it’s helped me to discover my potential. I’ll always have good memories of being here.”

Meet the real Engineers – Amaechi Chiemela Victor

As part of our #3DFuture project we’re seeing where Engineering can take you by speaking to some real Engineers.

What is your name? 

Amaechi Chiemela Victor

What is your job? Please describe what your job involves day to day.

I am a Standared Engineer. It involves elaboration of standards, codes and recommended practices. It also involves standardisation processes, and some factory inspection, as well as certification and audit for quality system management. I also do research works in Engineering, and presently doing a PhD in Engineering in Lancaster University, which helps me run engineering modelling tasks and studies.

 What is your favourite thing about your job?

As an Engineer, I love the design tasks, and using CAD to model my work. Such as, OrcaFlex, Solidworks, etc.

How did you get to the position you’re in now? What was your education path?

I studied Civil Engineering in BEng and MSc, and registered to become a Chattered Engineer. Next, I got the job as a Standards Engineer II and rose to Standards Engineer I, but I love research so I started a PhD in Engineering in Lancaster University. My research work is on Offshore Engineering, designing composite risers for offshore platforms.

What is your favourite thing about Engineering?

In engineering, it develops my intellect through Critical thinking. I am also left as a Project Manager to analyse a problem, and solve it.

The King with Twelve Dogs

My name is Okey Bethel. I have a story about the late king of my mother's community who had twelve wild dogs.

He used them to torture and eat any of his servants who made a mistake. One of the
servants gave an opinion which was wrong, and the king didn’t like it at all. So he ordered that
the servant be thrown to the dogs.

The servant said, “I served you for ten years, and you do this to me? Please give me ten days before throwing me to those dogs!”

The king wanted to shrug but he agreed.

In those ten days, the servant went to the guard who looks after the dogs and told him he would like to serve the dogs for the next ten days. The guard was baffled but agreed, and the servant started feeding the dogs, cleaning for them, bathing them, and providing all sorts of comfort for them.

When the ten days were over, the king ordered that the servant be thrown to the dogs for his punishment. When he was thrown in, we were all amazed to see the ravenous dogs only licking the
feet of the servant!

The king, baffled at what he was seeing, said, ”What has happened to my dogs?”

The servant replied, "I served the dogs for only ten days, and they didn’t forget my service. Yet I served you for a whole ten years and you forgot all, at my first mistake!"

The king realised his mistake and ordered the servant to be set free.

This story is a message to all those who forget the good things a person did for them as soon as the person makes a mistake towards them. Hope this made sense?

MORAL LESSON:
1. Don’t put out the history that is filled with good because of a mistake you don’t like.
2. If you are a leader, also try to love your subordinates; try to value their service and appreciate them.

An O. Henry Writing

Today, we hear of the famous literary award called "O. Henry Award" for exceptional merits in short stories. Actually, an O. Henry writing is a style of writing that has a great flow with an unexpected ending. William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American short story writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings.

William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862,in Greensboro, North Carolina. He changed the spelling of his middle name to Sydney in 1898. His parents were Dr. Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–88), a physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–65). William's parents had married on April 20, 1858. When William was three, his mother died from tuberculosis, and he and his father moved into the home of his paternal grandmother. As a child, Porter was always reading, everything from classics to dime novels; his favorite works were Lane's translation of One Thousand and One Nights, and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy.^[2]

Porter graduated from his aunt Evelina Maria Porter's elementary school in 1876. He then enrolled at the Lindsey Street High School. His aunt continued to tutor him until he was fifteen. In 1879, he started working in his uncle's drugstore and in 1881, at the age of nineteen, he was licensed as a pharmacist. At the drugstore, he also showed off his natural artistic talents by sketching the townsfolk.

Porter's most prolific writing period started in 1902, when he moved to New York City to be near his publishers. While there, he wrote 381 short stories. He wrote a story a week for over a year for the New York World Sunday Magazine. His wit, characterization, and plot twists were adored by his readers, but often panned by critics.

Porter married again in 1907 to childhood sweetheart Sarah (Sallie) Lindsey Coleman, whom he met again after revisiting his native state of North Carolina. Sarah Lindsey Coleman was herself a writer and wrote a romanticized and fictionalized version of their correspondence and courtship in her novella Wind of Destiny.

O. Henry's stories frequently have surprise endings. In his day, he was called the American answer to Guy de Maupassant. While both authors wrote plot twist endings, O. Henry stories were considerably more playful. His stories are also known for witty narration.

Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc.

O. Henry's work is wide-ranging, and his characters can be found roaming the cattle-lands of Texas, exploring the art of the con-man, or investigating the tensions of class and wealth in turn-of-the-century New York. O. Henry had an inimitable hand for isolating some element of society and describing it with an incredible economy and grace of language. Some of his best and least-known work is contained in Cabbages and Kings, a series of stories each of which explores some individual aspect of life in a paralytically sleepy Central American town, while advancing some aspect of the larger plot and relating back one to another.

Cabbages and Kings was his first collection of stories, followed by The Four Million. The second collection opens with a reference to Ward McAllister's "assertion that there were only 'Four Hundred' people in New York City who were really worth noticing. But a wiser man has arisen—the census taker—and his larger estimate of human interest has been preferred in marking out the field of these little stories of the 'Four Million.'" To O. Henry, everyone in New York counted.

He had an obvious affection for the city, which he called "Bagdad-on-the-Subway",^[6] and many of his stories are set there—while others are set in small towns or in other cities.

His final work was "Dream", a short story intended for the magazine The Cosmopolitan but left incomplete at the time of his death.^[7]

Among his most famous stories are:

• "The Gift of the Magi" about a young couple who are short of money but desperately want to buy each other Christmas gifts. Unbeknownst to Jim, Della sells her most valuable possession, her beautiful hair, in order to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch; while unbeknownst to Della, Jim sells his own most valuable possession, his watch, to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. The essential premise of this story has been copied, re-worked, parodied, and otherwise re-told countless times in the century since it was written.
• "The Ransom of Red Chief", in which two men kidnap a boy of ten. The boy turns out to be so bratty and obnoxious that the desperate men ultimately pay the boy's father $250 to take him back.
• "The Cop and the Anthem" about a New York City hobo named Soapy, who sets out to get arrested so that he can be a guest of the city jail instead of sleeping out in the cold winter. Despite efforts at petty theft, vandalism, disorderly conduct, and "mashing" with a young prostitute, Soapy fails to draw the attention of the police. Disconsolate, he pauses in front of a church, where an organ anthem inspires him to clean up his life—and is ironically charged for loitering and sentenced to three months in prison.
• "A Retrieved Reformation", which tells the tale of safecracker Jimmy Valentine, recently freed from prison. He goes to a town bank to case it before he robs it. As he walks to the door, he catches the eye of the banker's beautiful daughter. They immediately fall in love and Valentine decides to give up his criminal career. He moves into the town, taking up the identity of Ralph Spencer, a shoemaker. Just as he is about to leave to deliver his specialized tools to an old associate, a lawman who recognizes him arrives at the bank. Jimmy and his fiancée and her family are at the bank, inspecting a new safe, when a child accidentally gets locked inside the airtight vault. Knowing it will seal his fate, Valentine opens the safe to rescue the child. However, much to Valentine's surprise, the lawman denies recognizing him and lets him go.
• "The Duplicity of Hargraves". A short story about a nearly destitute father and daughter's trip to Washington, D.C.
• "The Caballero's Way", in which Porter's most famous character, the Cisco Kid, is introduced. It was first published in 1907 in the July issue of Everybody's Magazine and collected in the book Heart of the West that same year. In later film and TV depictions, the Kid would be portrayed as a dashing adventurer, perhaps skirting the edges of the law, but primarily on the side of the angels. In the original short story, the only story by Porter to feature the character, the Kid is a murderous, ruthless border desperado, whose trail is dogged by a heroic Texas Ranger. The twist ending is, unusually for Porter, tragic.
